Copyright - Can anyone advise me?

Can anyone give me some advice on copyright? I am going to submit a short story I have written to a Children's story competition as mentioned in Cally's blog (thanks Cally) and I want to copyright my work. I have read up a little on this and there seems to be many different ways to do this such as marking my work or registering it. Can anyone advise me on what I should do as I am more than a little confused?

Getting Organised

I've decided its about time I got more organised with my writing. I am going to get all my work together past, present and future and collate everything into one folder. I am going to take it everywhere and add to it each day. I am going to create character profiles for everyone in my novel so that they become close to me. I am also creating a contacts list of who I will and have sent articles to. I will also have an ideas section for well, ideas. I can't wait to get started!

Describing my main character

I have just finished my list for one of my 3 main male characters. He is one of two out of the 3 that isnt based on anyone I know. I wrote my character's name down and made a list of good and bad points. I wrote quite a few things for each side but he still doesn't seem real to me. I can't picture what he looks like. The other two I can picture because one is someone I know, and other I think reminds me of a character on a television show. But this one I still can't picture and therefore I am finding it quite hard to describe him. Maybe its because he is the character who the reader is supposed to dislike. Il keep working at it, any advice would be welcome in any shape or form.

Feeling sad today

Ive been feeling really down today. I read the news this morning of Heath Ledger's untimely death and it got me thinking of the people I have known and lost. It also didn't help me listening to Ray Lamontagne's album which always makes me shed a tear. Hopefully I will snap out of this funk soon. I am going concentrate hard on my writing tonight as I have been busy with my shorthand revision.

London Baby!

I had a great day yesterday. As part of my xmas present from my lovely boyfriend we took in the sights and sounds of London. First stop, shopping in Tottenham Court Road, then Subway, tube, Madam Taussauds (please see pic with my mate Freddie). I went to MT when I first moved up to London 10 years ago and I was pleased to see all the new faces as well as some old (Humphrey Bogart being a particular favourite of mine). I was also very excited to have a sit in the BB Diary Room chair. We even had a dvd made. The Chambers Live! was so so scary and my boyf, who wasn't too impressed with me hanging onto him through it all thought it was hilarious.
Then it was onto the Ambassadors Theatre where we saw Stomp. What a great show, and surprisingly funny too. If you haven't seen it then I would thoroughly recommend it.

Found this on A Writer's blog and thought I'd give it a go

I knew that C in Keyboarding class would pay off. But seriously my little sister types faster than me and that is from sheer dedication to msn messenger!!

Update

Its all been a bit quiet on the blogging front but I have been here in the background working away on my novel. I've been reading through it the past couple of days and I'm happy to say bits made me laugh out loud and I didn't hate reading it. When I've done essays for English in the past I usually cringed at the thought of reading my own work. I'm going to start writing more over the next few days with all my notes in tow and hope I make a big improvement on that Mount Everest of a wordometer.

Everyone's talking about:

Exercise

The whole office is going detox and fitness crazy. A colleague who is a regular gym goer said he had never seen the gym so busy as in the first week of January. I wonder how long that lasts. I have seen a few good workout dvd's (I'm gym phobic) - I'm thinking of trying out the Dirty Dancing one - lets go for a record here and pray it lasts for longer than 2 weeks before I give it up, advising myself that it really isn't safe exercising during 'the time of the month' and following with various other excuses such as, 'it's too cold', I'm hungry and you should never exercise on an empty or full stomach. Besides my cupboards are still full of xmas sweets and treats so there wouldn't be much point in exercise now would there.

Some Progress Finally

Yesterday I made some progress with:

My novel - I printed it out and read it for the first time properly. I made loads of notes on things to add and change.

My Shorthand - I will take the exam this year, I hadn't done any study on that for a while and I went back to it yesterday and was surprised that I still know my stuff.

Today I spent most of my lunch time queuing at the post office. Can someone tell me why do oap's decide to choose lunch time to go to the post office please??? Therefore I've not got much else done today. Oh the mid week joy of it all.

Me and my sis
A BIG thanks to my sister who thought up the idea of buying me the Adrian Mole book. I did not mention this in my earlier post as I am a fool I tell you, FOOL!!!
THANK YOU
XXXX

Is it just me or:

Is everyone getting engaged? If it isnt members of my family, its the people I work with. I'm in no mad rush to tie the knot with my boyfriend of 4 years but I'm starting to wonder why people who havent been together all that long seem to be proposing to each other left right and centre. I have a very fickle view of marriage. When I was younger I always said I would only get married in Vegas (thank you very much), and previous to meeting my boyfriend I had vowed that I would never marry. I now look forward to the day where my dad walks me down the ailse and gives me away (and so does he I am sure). We felt the pressure from friends and family as we attented my brother and his fiance's engagement party. People asked my boyfriend when he would make an honest woman of me. If we never tie the knot does that make me a dishonest woman and will anyone ever buy us a toaster!

Words Fail Me

I still haven't done any writing since before Christmas. Yesterday evening I sat at my computer screen and nothing happened so I just gave up.
However, all is not lost, as I finally made it to Waterstones in my lunch hour today. I bought 'See Jane Write' and I must say, I am really impressed so far. I read bits and pieces on my bus journey home and I feel inspired. I am going to spend a few hours reading it tonight and then hopefully make some progress tomorrow.

Happy New Year

Its good to be back and feeling almost 100%. Apart from a mild cough I'm feeling back to normal. It would appear that I have passed the flu onto my whole office though.
Bit depressing going back to work today but it got me out of bed and away from the TV.
I got some great presents at xmas. It just proved to me how supportive my friends and family are of my writing. My friend at work bought me a really cool t-shirt which reads:

'Be careful or I'll kill you in a book'
www.lorifoster.com

Cool huh!!!

My mum and Dad bought me The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole - the first book I ever read of my own accord. Inside were the words

'If the writer has a masterpiece within, he had better save it on paper. Otherwise, none of us will ever miss it.'
I almost cried I must admit

My boyfriend gave me waterstones vouchers and permission to write about him lol

Thanks for the great gifts, they mean a lot
