Why do you want to be a Journalist?

Well thats just it I don't. But I did. Or at least I thought I did, that is, until someone I worked with asked me 'Why do you want to be a Journalist?'. My answer plain and simple was 'Because I love to write'.
'Then why don't you be a writer' she spat back at me. If my answer had been something along the lines of 'Because I'm interested in people' then I probably wouldn't be here writing this now. I went away from that conversation feeling deflated. Every bit of effort towards a career in News Reporting was a waste of time I thought. Maybe it was but it made me realise that 'Why don't I become a writer? Why the hell not? I love to tell stories and I love to share them so that is what I am going to do.

  1. It's funny how a question like that can bring you up short. I enjoy writing features as well as fiction, though they're different disciplines, but news reporting never really appealed to me. Maybe you could do a bit of both?

  2. I know was quite shocked at that. I like writing and reading about fact but I'm not that clued up on media law, politics, local government etc etc. I studied with the nctj and all that bored me so that also made me realise that it wasnt for me. I would love to get into magazine journalism. I went on a great freelance course with Pulford Media which taught me a lot but I've never had the confidence to send anything. Competitions seem easier for some reason.

  3. It might be worth plucking up the courage to send something in...sometimes feedback can be helpful :o) The only trouble with competitions is that so many people enter the bloomin' things!

  4. You right there, but I dont mind a bit of competition, especially if I end up doing well in it. I will send something soon. I have a few ideas but I just need to focus on one thing at a time. My problem is I get easily distracted and never end up seeing things through. Which is why I'm so grateful for all the writers support on my blog. I wouldn't still be here otherwise. Thank you
